Reyyy & The Moviez

Some pals of mine in Portland were part of a group interview where they discussed their fav (and least fav) Superhero Films. Looked like good fun so I copied the questions and gave my own answers :] Enjoy!!

1) What’s your favorite film of a superhero comic book and why?

THE DARK KNIGHT. Endlessly watchable, densely packed movie. Perfectly cast. It hooks you from it’s first frames until the very last one. Also, it’s a unique interpretation of Batman; it doesn’t just strive to emulate the comics, it is it’s own animal and it’s a beast at that. Heath Ledger also completely kills it as the Joker, but that’s not news to anyone.

The Avengers is like the ultimate hybrid drug of perfect Fanboy Adaptation meets total Accessible Pop Culture Blockbuster, and I love it (really love it)– But I believe The Dark Knight will go down in history as being simply a great film that stands on it’s own. Not just an “event”. Like seriously, watching The Avengers on DVD in your room is gonna be so weird without an audience cheering every 2 minutes. Dark Knight though, it only needs itself to survive. YOU DONT WATCH DARK KNIGHT, DARK KNIGHT WATCHES YOU.

2) What favorite superhero comic of yours was, in your view, botched in its screen version and why?

Okay, although the first and 2nd movies are decent, and First Class is really good in it’s own way– I feel X-Men has yet to receive the big screen treatment it deserves. Mostly I want to see a more bombastic X-Men movie, not overly bogged down with the political subtext. I want to see 90′s X-Men on screen, in some crazy hi-tech suits (NOT BLACK LEATHER), killing some BROOD. I want some Days of Future’s Past, Cable, and time-travel. Maybe some Apocalypse? And for fuck’s sake can we get WOLVERINE in his SIGNATURE FOR-REAL MASK finally?? I know it seems really impractical and crazy, but look at Owl Man in Snyder’s Watchmen or Marvel fan films on Youtube– with finesse, IT CAN BE DONE! I’m sick of only seeing LOGAN in movies. We have yet to see THE REAL WOLVERINE realized in film!!!!

3) What superhero comic that you love hasn’t been made into a film and ought to be?

This probably doesn’t qualify as “Superhero”, but a BERSERK movie done well would completely own. Kentaro Miura himself cites Ridley Scott as one of his inspirations– Imagine GLADIATOR meets SPARTACUS but with demons and magic and freaking GUTS. I want to see it. (Yes, there is a series of animated movies coming out currently– but I’d love to see Berserk in live action)

Also, the Death Note movie was total balls. I’d like to see a more experienced director go at it, most likely with Zac Efron playing Light Yagami. He’s a dead ringer for the character and he’s GETTING OLD SO DO IT FAST, MAN. This proposed Death Note movie would probably have to be a Hollywood adaptation and I’m cool with that.

4) What’s your favorite non-superhero comic/graphic novel adaptation and why?

V For Vendetta. Along with the original Matrix, and Speed Racer, this is the Wachowski’s at their best. Awesome performances by Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman, two of my fav actors. It’s nice to see Natalie P doing something badass in the vein of The Professional, too, post-Star Wars. Uhhhh this MAY almost qualify as “Super Hero”… But nah.

5) Why (besides money) do you think the movies and comics/graphic novels have become such a potent union?

COZ COMICS ARE THE BEST AND ALSO MOVIES ARE GOOD

Thanks for your writing. I would also like to say that your health insurance dealer also works best for the benefit of the particular coordinators of any group insurance policy. The health broker is given a listing of benefits looked for by a person or a group coordinator. What any broker may is seek out individuals or coordinators which often best fit those demands. Then he offers his recommendations and if both parties agree, the particular broker formulates legal contract between the 2 parties.
